Challenge: Trio of Colors
The challenge this week is to use three colors of ink, paint, or another color medium of the same kind. From distress ink to gelatos, acrylic paint to watercolor pencils – you can pick the medium and the trio! I have no doubt some great color combinations will be shared, and new inspiration found.
Cheiron experimented with some new Distress colors to make a bunch of papers she cut into tags.
I love trying out new color combos, and was inspired by a dress I was wearing the other day to combine Blueprint Sketch, Fossilized Amber and Cracked Pistachio Distress Paints. When I play around with new Distress Paint combos, I like to cut a bunch of panels of Distress Watercolor cardstock and play with the colors to see how they work together. I loved this combo and decided to cut out a bunch of tags out of my painted cardstock using my Tim Holtz Framelits tag dies to use on future projects or in my art journal.
Michelle was inspired by some of her favorite inks.
Catkin Green, Red Geranium, and Sky Blue are my current favorite ink colors. These colors inspired my mixed media mail folio filled with fun elements from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Ephemera pack as well as some other fun surprises.
Andrea made some muse jars that could certainly come in handy.
As my eyelids drooped and my head started bobbing forward even as I tried to do some crafting, I realized that I could use a little more sleep; and if not that, at least a little more pep or oomph or inspiration! And so these little shaker jars were born. One holds pep, another holds oomph and the last one holds some muse. I made them by blending three of my most-loved inks: Worn Lipstick, Mustard Seed and Peacock Feathers.
Anna-Karin went for a monochrome look this week.
Minutes before starting on this project, I got a parcel with the new Blueprint Sketch Distress Ink, and I decided to make my page with three shades of blue Distress Ink. I used Simon Says Stamp lovely Sail Away stamp set, and built a wavy sea scene. The word dies are also by Simon Says Stamp.
Sandra made a color explosion with the three primary colors.
I was in the mood of some color and why not use the primary colors, make some splatters and lots of new colors along the way. By tapping Peacock Feathers, Picked Raspberry and Mustard Seed Distress Stain kinda hard onto the paper color explosions were happening. The sentiment is from the KaiserCraft Chace Rainbows stamp set.
Maura’s heading to the ocean for inspiration.
My go to color trio is green, purple and blue. I reach for these colors over and over. As summer draws to an end, my thoughts head to the ocean and the possibility of one more beach day. I had fun altering an Altoids tin with distress paints in Twisted Citron, Seedless Preserves , and Mermaid Lagoon. Of course, I had to use the Nautical Blueprint stamps with this tin!
Emma’s fun journal pages are an explosion of colour!
Like so many other people, I love Tim Holtz’s Bird Crazy stamp set and used one of the adorable images together with the matching die set to create my journal pages. I surrounded my artistic bird with a trio of colours using Ripe Persimmon and Picked Raspberry Distress Ink and gold sequins, which for me are three colours that are a match made in heaven.
Barbara was inspired by the sea and the soft colors of sand and shells, thinking about the holidays that are running out!
This week I have taken literally the theme of our challenge and I used three colors of the same type for each part of my canvas! Three Alcohol inks for the background, three Distress paints to color Letterpress, three Distress markers to color the shell and three embossing powders to decorate the corners.
Nicole is ready to fly.
Who can resist Sizzix Bird Silhouette die. The creative possibilities are endless with this bird. I wanted to add my own twist for the trio of color using my Custom Blend DIY Ink Pad. I love how the trio of colors blend. I continued my elements of green trio with the tiny tatter floral flowers and even with the tags background.
Meihsia picked her favorite colors from her Distress Ink collection for the project this week.
Picked Raspberry, Faded Jeans and Evergreen Bough are the most beautiful colors in Tim Holtz Distress Mini Ink Pad collection to me. After stamping and heat embossing the tag with Tim Holtz Cling Stamp and Clearsnap Clear Embossing Powder, I applied these three colors on the tag using ColorBox Art Daubers.
Ashli decided to put her trio of color to use on some custom embellishments this week!
I love the rich color that Gelatos provide. Using my Dear Lizzy Flower die, I turned my Gelato painted paper into some custom leaves and such to embellish my page with. The Wood Hoop adds some dynamic dimension along with the flower while the Simple Stories Brads finish off this page about my dear friend.
Suzz has been watching Project Runway and getting inspired by the designers.
I love Project Runway and seeing what the designers do on a weekly basis with the crazy challenges that are thrown at them. I used one of the techniques that different designers use on their outfits which is color blocking. It took me a few tries with different results and a decision to just mix up my colors on one of my cards, but I was pleased with my results. I used the Heidi Swapp Color Shines to lay down my trio of colors: Salmon, Patina and Mustard. The rest was playing with different stencils and additional colors to add patterns to form my chic & stylish background. I am glad our timelines for the challenge aren’t as short as the designers on the show.
For more inspiration click on our design team’s blog links so you can see more photos (and full supply lists) for their projects. Leave them a little comment love while you’re there so they know how they’ve inspired you too, if you’re so inclined.
As always, Simon Says Stamp is giving away a $50 gift voucher that will go to a random entry chosen by random generator. To qualify all you need to do is create a new project that ties in (in any way!) with our theme and post it, along with a link back to this challenge, and add a link here. This challenge will end at 11:59pm on Sunday September 6th Eastern time. We will also be choosing some of our entries to put in the spotlight – a special honor where we talk about why we loved that entry in particular and award a special badge too! For the full rules, read the “challenge rules” posted in the side-bar here on our blog.

Sorry ladies I numbered my second entry as #3 which is wrong. It should be #2 and I can’t seem to change it. Hope to play along more this week so will add my next one as #2, many thanks Karen x

Greets from Manu
I usually like to work around a three colors, so I loved this challenge. Thanks for sharing such beautiful and inspirational pieces, DT members. Blessings!
Wanting to make sure that the trio of colors need to bee a medium like you indicate which is inks, paints, water colors, pencil colors, etc. I’m figuring that cardstock trio of colors is not a medium. Is that correct? Reason I ask is because I see some entries that have trio of cardstock colors and want to make sure I understand correctly. Not trying to rock the trio medium boat so please do not take this the wrong way or I’ll have Captain Jack Sparrow make you walk the plank. Yo ho ho!
